Cinque Terre is one of Italy's most breathtaking destinations, but a few common mistakes can make your trip more stressful than it needs to be. Here are the top 10 mistakes to avoid.
1. Underestimating the Hiking Trails
Many of the trails are steep, with lots of stairs and very little shade. Wear hiking shoes or at least comfortable sneakers with good traction.
2. Visiting in the Middle of the Day
Between 11:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m.—especially during the summer—the villages and trails can get extremely crowded. Early mornings and late afternoons offer a much more enjoyable experience.
3. Driving Between the Villages
Parking is limited, expensive, and the roads are narrow. The train is by far the easiest and most convenient way to travel between the five villages.
4. Forgetting to Check Trail Conditions
Some hiking trails may be temporarily closed due to maintenance or landslides. Always check the latest trail updates before you go.
5. Not Bringing Enough Water
Summer temperatures can get very hot. Carry a reusable water bottle and refill it at the public fountains whenever you can.
6. Trying to See Everything in Half a Day
Cinque Terre deserves at least a full day—two days if possible—to truly enjoy each village without feeling rushed.
7. Eating Only at Tourist Hotspots
You'll often find better food and better prices by walking just a few streets away from the main waterfront areas.
8. Leaving Your Swimsuit at Home
Even if you're visiting mainly for the hiking, you may want to take a swim in one of the beautiful beaches or small coves, especially in Monterosso.
9. Waiting Until the Last Minute to Book
If you're visiting between May and September, book your accommodations and popular restaurants well in advance.
10. Only Visiting the Famous Photo Spots
The iconic viewpoints are amazing, but don't miss the quiet back streets, hillside vineyards, and hidden corners. Some of the best memories come from simply slowing down and enjoying the atmosphere.
