Camogli - Genova
A splendid village overlooking the Gulf Paradise, on the eastern Ligurian Riviera.
A quintessential fishing village is distinguished by its tall, vibrantly painted houses that captivate the eye. This romantic village, set against a stunning natural backdrop, has enchanted tourists from around the globe for centuries, offering a blend of relaxation, culture, seaside charm, and exquisite cuisine.
Originally focused on maritime and commercial activities, Camogli has over the years developed notable artisanal crafts, including spinning, weaving, and dyeing of fabrics.
A distinctive feature of this region, as well as of Liguria, is the traditional painted facades, known as "trompe l'oeil," which depict architectural elements such as bases, cornices, balconies, flowers, and closed shutters.
Among the sites worth visiting are numerous churches, starting with the Minor Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, which overlooks the small harbor and was constructed in the 12th century; this church boasts a double facade in Ionic style.
Additionally, there is the Sanctuary of Our Lady of the Woods, built at the site where, according to popular tradition, the Madonna appeared in the 1500s. The unique "Millenaria" church, dedicated to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and dating back to the 13th century, is also noteworthy, as is the parish church of San Rocco located in the hamlet of San Rocco di Camogli, which offers panoramic views of the Gulf Paradise.
Among the civil architecture, one can find the small Dragonara Castle, erected during the medieval period to protect the village and the entire coastline.
Lastly, another defensive structure to explore is the distinctive Punta Chiappa Battery, constructed between the 1930s and 1940s and utilized during World War II.
