Top things to do in Cinque Terre
Hike the Sentiero Azzurro
One of the most renowned paths in Cinque Terre is the Sentiero Azzurro (Blue Trail), which connects all five villages along the rugged coastline (identified as SVA on maps). Unfortunately, in recent times it has been uncommon to find it entirely accessible, as winter storms have led to closures of several lengthy segments. The most manageable section – though classified as moderate – is from Corniglia to Vernazza (2.5 miles, featuring a steep downward trail towards the end). For thelatest information on closures, be sure to check the national park website before you start your journey.
Swim, dive into the sea, kayaking
Experience the magnificent Mediterranean Sea, a stunning expanse of blue that beckons adventurers and relaxation seekers alike. Dive in to swim in the clearest water you'll ever encounter, where the sunlit waves gently embrace you, and the vibrant marine life flourishes beneath the surface.
Paddle near to the picturesque coastline, exploring hidden coves and beautiful beaches that dot the landscape, creating unforgettable memories in this idyllic paradise.
See the coastline from the sea
Experience the breathtaking views of Cinque Terre's stunning scenery from the water by taking a boat ride with Navigazione Golfo dei Poeti. This journey allows you to appreciate the isolation of the area – a road was only constructed here in the 1960s – and witness how the inhabitants have transformed steep cliffs into fruitful terraces, turning an inhospitable terrain into a productive landscape. Arriving at the small harbors of the villages is an unforgettable adventure, and you can continue your trip to La Spezia or, in my opinion, to Levanto.
Walk the Via dell'Amore
The most renowned trail in Cinque Terre has traditionally been La Via dell'Amore, a flat, easy-to-navigate 1km (half-mile) walkway that connects Riomaggiore and Manarola. It has been closed since 2012 due to damage from landslides, but is scheduled to reopen in July 2024 for guided tours exclusively. I had a preview last year and I was quite impressed, the tours delve into the area's rich historical background which encourages visitors to appreciate more than just the vibrant hues of the houses.

It's time to indulge in more wine: for me, nothing encapsulates the essence of Cinque Terre quite like standing atop the hills, listening to the tales of locals who have been crafting bottles that, during the Renaissance, were so esteemed that they adorned the tables of kings and popes. Working those steep slopes is grueling labor, and although the vineyards today are only a fraction of their former size, they play a crucial role in stabilizing the increasingly delicate landscape and mitigating the impacts of climate change.
The easiest, and most enjoyable way to absorb this heritage is through a vineyard tour. You can try on the hills overlooking Vernazza on a tour presented by Cheo, the vistas of the village, castle, and sea from the vineyards are absolutely breathtaking. Be sure to savor the deliciously sweet sciacchetrà wine that Cinque Terre is renowned for, the sea-salt breeze imparts a unique and incredible flavor.
